Meet Shehan Pitiduwa Hewage Weeraratne

Credit Risk Model Validation Specialist, UniCredit Group

I’m Shehan – born in Rome, with part of my childhood spent in Sri Lanka – an experience that shaped my ability to see the world from diverse perspectives. This multicultural background continues to influence how I think, connect with people, and approach challenges both personally and professionally.

I began my journey at UniCredit as an intern and have since grown into the role of Credit Risk Model Validation Specialist. My responsibility is to ensure that the internal models used to assess credit risk are robust, compliant with regulations, and aligned with the bank’s risk appetite. I work closely with model developers and risk managers, providing an independent and critical assessment of model performance and integrity.

What I enjoy most about my role is the unique combination of quantitative analysis and strategic insight. Every model I review tells its own story, and I find real satisfaction in uncovering meaningful insights through detailed examination.

I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of numbers and risk within the financial sector, which is why I chose this career path. My strongest skill is analytical thinking – whether it’s solving complex problems or managing a busy schedule, I thrive on breaking things down and building smarter solutions.

A recent milestone in my learning journey was attending the UniCredit Foundation’s Summer School Program at the London School of Economics. This gave me the chance to deepen my knowledge of machine learning techniques and connect with talented colleagues from across the globe.

What makes UniCredit stand out for me is its inclusive, international and highly supportive environment. There’s a strong focus on both professional growth and work-life balance. I felt particularly valued during the design of the new validation framework, when my contributions were recognised by senior management – a moment that made me feel truly appreciated.

The culture here is dynamic and team-oriented. One highlight I’ll always remember is celebrating with my team after successfully completing a major project – a genuine testament to our shared dedication and hard work.

A typical day sees me reviewing validation tasks, analysing data, engaging in technical discussions with developers, and coordinating with risk managers. Collaboration and strategic problem-solving are at the heart of everything I do.

Outside of work, I’m passionate about travelling, practising CrossFit, and actively supporting the Sri Lankan community in Italy.

Three words to describe me:

curious, resilient, energetic

Three words to describe my job:

risk-savvy, critical-thinking, integrity-driven

Meet Girolamo Antonucci

ESG Specialist for South Region, UniCredit Italy

My journey at UniCredit – or as I like to call it my “UniJourney” – began in 2002, when I first joined the Group Operations team in Milan.

For several years I held the role of Production Planner, but I believe I truly unlocked my potential and passion when I shifted my focus from numbers to people. As a manager, I’ve learned the profound impact that occurs when our personal and company values align. At UniCredit, I am grateful to see that trust, respect and transparency - fundamentals I live by - are not just encouraged but genuinely nurtured every day.

One of the biggest leaps in my career that marked my “UniJourney” was in 2014 when I started a 7-year international experience as Branch Manager, first in Romania and then in Poland. Being an expat was an incredible challenge: on one hand I discovered the full value of diversity, meeting different cultures and amazing people, while also overcoming organisational and interpersonal barriers.

After so many years abroad, returning to Milan brought a desire to be closer to my family and home region, as well as to enhance my work-life balance. Luckily, UniCredit is a company that encourages both cross-country and cross-divisional growth, so launching my next big change: a new business area in a new location – was seamless. It was yet another confirmation of how the unique blend of geography and activities across our Group offers an extraordinary context full of opportunities to match every employee’s needs.

Today, it’s been 2 years since I moved to Napoli, in the Region Sud, where I work as an ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) Specialist. Thanks to my new role I have the privilege to support the development of the area where I was born, promoting the culture of sustainability and change. Supporting local customers in the transition to a more sustainable future and empowering our local communities and new generations to progress, is deeply fulfilling - not only on professionally, but personally, as I contribute to building a better tomorrow for all.

While I enjoy my current pace, I am sure that new, greater challenges will arise in the next years. In the meantime, I continue learning new skills and competencies with strong dedication and commitment to embrace future opportunities with the same enthusiasm and passion as ever.

Outside work, I'm a very active and while I love to explore a wide variety of sports, I enjoy running the most. Whenever possible, I go for long runs in the nature, which allows me to reconnect with myself and recharge my batteries, enhancing my mental well-being. This is key to be able to fully experience all new good things life offers me.

Three words to describe me:

passion, courage and curiosity

Three words to describe my job:

strategic, dynamic, exciting
