Andrea Orcel, CEO of UniCredit, delivered a powerful message about the role of Italy and its banking system in shaping Europe’s future. Orcel highlighted how empowering communities through financial strength and strategic investment is essential for progress.

“We have the talent, creativity, innovation, and global brands. But without scaling industries like banking and capital markets, we fail to unlock this value,” Orcel said.

He emphasised that Italy, as the third-largest economy in Europe, holds untapped potential. With excellence in manufacturing, design, and innovation, Italy can take a leadership role, if it overcomes bureaucratic and structural barriers.

Orcel also addressed the importance of strong, locally rooted banks. UniCredit’s federated model, with seven regional banks making 95% of decisions locally, allows it to be deeply embedded in communities while benefiting from the scale of a pan-European group.

“We are stronger in the regions, more rooted, and faster. Our growth in small and medium enterprises outpaces competitors,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Orcel sees 2026 as a challenging year, but one where UniCredit is prepared to accelerate. After four years of transformation, the bank is now focused on growth, resilience, and supporting families and businesses.

“We want to take advantage of these difficulties, having already invested to grow and support our clients. That’s how we gain credibility and market share.”
