- Investment supports growth of leading German debt marketplace and strengthens UniCredit's digital capital markets ecosystem
UniCredit has acquired a minority stake in VC Trade, a Frankfurt-based fintech company operating one of Europe's leading digital marketplaces and infrastructure for debt transactions. The investment, which also gives UniCredit the option to increase its investment and shareholding over time, will support VC Trade's continued growth and international expansion, while strengthening the bank's ability to serve clients through more efficient, digital debt financing solutions across Europe.
Founded in 2016, VC Trade has established itself as a key technology platform for the lending markets, providing end-to-end digital infrastructure across the lifecycle of debt transactions, including syndicated loans, Schuldscheine and other debt instruments. The platform already connects a broad network of banks, issuers and institutional investors across Europe - and is the leading marketplace by both volume and number of transactions intermediated within the German Schuldschein market.
By digitising workflows and connecting market participants through a common platform, VC Trade helps reduce execution complexity and increases the efficiency with which debt capital can be raised and distributed.
The transaction further demonstrates UniCredit's commitment to investing in innovation and growth opportunities in Germany, one of the bank's core markets, and will help the company expand its services across the bank's pan-European footprint.
The investment also expands UniCredit's growing digital financing ecosystem, supporting the development of more efficient financial market infrastructure that helps connect borrowers, investors and capital more effectively. This reduced friction in debt issuance and distribution processes bolsters the bank's ongoing efforts to broaden access to capital markets products, improve market connectivity and efficiently direct capital towards productive opportunities.
Sam Kendall, Head of Advisory & Financing Solutions, UniCredit, said: "The challenge facing European capital markets is not a shortage of capital. It is the cost of connecting capital with the companies and projects that can put it to productive use, particularly in the mid-market and SME segments. Reducing this cost to serve is at the heart of our UniCredit Unlimited strategy and VC Trade has built impressive technology that addresses the challenge directly - reducing inefficiencies in the debt market and helping participants find one another more effectively. I'm excited to work alongside them as we look to build the capital markets architecture for Europe's future."
Stefan Fromme, CEO of VC Trade, said: "UniCredit's investment is an important milestone for VC Trade. We share a common vision for the future of debt markets - one built on end-to-end digitalisation, connectivity and artificial intelligence supporting all involved transaction partners. By combining our technology platform with UniCredit's scale, market expertise and international reach, we are well positioned to accelerate adoption across Europe and deliver additional value to arrangers, agents, borrowers and lenders."
The deal follows UniCredit's recent investments in digital innovation across financial services, including the acquisition of a 16% stake in BlockInvest, a technology company specialising in blockchain-based financing, the launch of AI-powered M&A matching platform for SMEs, DealSync, and the issuance of Italy's first tokenised mini-bond. As such, it forms part of the bank's broader strategy to modernise capital markets infrastructure through smarter processes, automation and emerging digital asset capabilities.
