At UniCredit, we believe that leading by example is the right thing to do.

Our commitment to our communities, our people and our planet goes far beyond simply ticking a box – with ESG principles embedded in everything we do, and one of the five strategic imperatives of our long-term UniCredit Unlocked strategy.

Today we celebrate Earth Day, an annual reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take concerted action for a healthier planet and brighter future.

The theme of this year’s edition is the reduction of plastics waste, a commitment in line with our own corporate values – having become a single-use plastic free bank last year.

Together, we can have a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable world.

Planet vs. plastics

To mark this year’s Earth Day, colleagues in both Italy and Germany gathered for two volunteering days dedicated to the clean-up of local parks.

In Italy, a group of roughly thirty colleagues led by Head of Group Strategy & ESG Fiona Melrose, joined forces with environmental association Legambiente in the clean-up of the Parco della Martesana, Milan.

The event was a great success, with the team collecting over 36kg of rubbish (including 19kg of glass and 1.6kg of used cigarettes!) over the course of the afternoon whilst learning more about the valuable work Legambiente carries out in terms of protecting the environment and creating a more equitable, just and supportive society.

As a bank, we strive to have a positive social impact in line with our responsibilities as a social actor and believe that small actions like this can be a great example of doing the right thing, together – whilst also leveraging on our Group volunteering framework.

Elsewhere in Germany, the local ESG team also hosted a similar event close to the HVB Tower.

A group of around ten people went to the nearby Denninger Anger equipped with bin bags and gloves and cleaned up areas of the park during their lunchbreak, even enjoying a spot of sunshine in the process!

More around Group volunteering

In 2023, we launched our first Group-wide Volunteering Community, where colleagues can share new initiatives as well as experiences and ideas.

In less than a year since its official launch, this community has grown impressively, engaging employees from all countries in almost 280 initiatives, which have supported, directly and indirectly, several thousand beneficiaries across our local communities.
