Over the past decade, the climate conversation has been dominated by mitigation and how we reduce the emissions driving global warming.
But while reducing future emissions remains essential, it is no longer enough on its own. As temperatures continue to rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, attention is increasingly turning to how businesses, economies and communities can adapt and build resilience to the physical and economic impacts of climate change that are already being felt today.
This challenge is particularly acute in Europe, the world's fastest-warming continent. As we have seen in recent summers, heatwaves, floods and droughts are intensifying and causing significant losses for businesses, communities and essential infrastructure and services.
As a result, businesses are increasingly investing in measures to safeguard their operations and supply chains and global adaptation needs are expected to reach around €530 billion by 2030 and €700 billion by 2035. At the same time, this is creating significant opportunities and new markets for resilience technologies, infrastructure and services.
Yet a substantial financing gap remains, and banks such as UniCredit have a crucial role to play in mobilising the capital needed to build a more climate-resilient economy.
At ESG Day 2026, leading voices from business, finance, regulation and academia will explore how businesses can overcome the barriers to adaptation, mobilise investment and strengthen resilience in the face of growing climate risks.
Through expert keynotes and client roundtables focused on sectors most exposed to physical climate impacts, the discussion will examine how businesses and policymakers across Europe are responding to a changing climate and the role banks can play in supporting the transition to a more climate-resilient economy.
