LA FILARMONICA DELLA SCALA INCONTRA LA CITTA'

Open rehearsals in support of socially beneficial work, with Unidea - UniCredit Foundation

Milan, Friday, March 19, 2010 - The Filarmonica della Scala and its major partner UniCredit Group are proud to present La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la città. This program of open rehearsals is made possible in part through the support of Unidea - UniCredit Foundation and sponsored by the Department of Family, School and Social Policy of the Municipality of Milan and the Province of Milan. Proceeds from the events will be used in favour of four non-profit organizations.

The Filarmonica della Scala, together with UniCredit Group, look forward to "meeting the city" when they make available open rehearsals in connection with five concerts from the 2009/2010 season. This initiative, created with the organizational support of Aragorn Comunicazione, was made possible by the cooperation and availability of the Teatro alla Scala.

The first rehearsal featuring conductor Zubin Mehta is scheduled for Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 7:30 pm. Admission will be free of charge: this unique event is dedicated to the city of Milan and its citizens by UniCredit Group, together with the Unidea - UniCredit Foundation and the Filarmonica della Scala.

On the remaining four dates in April and May, with Daniele Gatti, Semyon Bychkov, Daniel Barenboim and Dennis Russell Davies, the Filarmonica will play in support of the Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus Foundation, the Associazione Arché, the Casa della carità Angelo Abriani Foundation and the Floriani Foundation. Ticket prices will range from €5 to €50 for each rehearsal.

La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la città embodies UniCredit Group's commitment to culture: making music and art accessible to audiences for whom culture would otherwise be distant and unattainable. The Group believes that culture is an engine of sustainable economic and social development, which can stimulate dialogue and encourage the exchange of ideas and innovation.

This series of open rehearsals will provide listeners an exciting and unique "behind the scenes" view and the distinguished conductors who lead the orchestra. Before rehearsals, conductors will be available to discuss their artistic choices and the distinct attributes of the works to be performed. At each open rehearsal, the conductor will be joined by supporters of Milan's cultural and vibrant musical scene, including the Councilor for Culture of the City of Milan, Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, music critics, Carla Moreni and Angelo Foletto and the actor and director Francesco Micheli. These events will be working rehearsals; participants will be in informal attire, the orchestra will stop and repeat passages and they will often rehearse parts and not all of the published program.

"I am pleased that initiatives like this are organized in Milan," said Mariolina Moioli, Councilor of School, Family and Social Policies of the Municipality of Milan. "They expose more young people to culture and support those vital organizations that work every day to help the city's vulnerable. Milan is the undisputed capital of Italian volunteerism, with more than 70,000 individuals and 371 organizations committed to using their free time to help the neediest. Our administration is at the forefront of supporting their efforts, as evidenced by our creation of a comprehensive listing of our area's volunteer organizations, outlining volunteer opportunities and programs available to individuals interested in helping our city."

"Open rehearsals are exciting opportunities to rethink the relationship between the city and music," explains the Councilor for Culture, Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, "It is a relationship in which Milan represents the face and music represents the voice."

The Filarmonica's Artistic Director Ernesto Schiavi adds that "Reaching out to a larger audience and offering visibility and support to those whose work benefits society are the reasons why the Filarmonica has, for the past fifteen years, opened some concert rehearsals for the benefit of non-profit associations, while all final Monday morning rehearsals are open to students in collaboration with Teatro alla Scala. This year, in addition to the organizational support of Aragorn Comunicazione, we have the strong support of UniCredit Group, our major partner, which shares our vision of the relationship between culture and society."

"These types of initiatives allow us to implement one of the fundamental principles of our mission - contributing to the development of the communities in which we work," says Antonella Massari, Head of Group Identity & Communications of UniCredit Group. "In fact, there is no sustainable development without due consideration for culture and social causes. Initiatives such as La Filarmonica della Scala incontra la Città allow us to support Milan and the voluntary associations that perform vital social work here."

"We are pleased to support these events for two reasons. First, because they offer the opportunity for a broader audience to attend rehearsals, and second, because this project, through our support, provides assistance to those organizations involved in social causes that are strongly linked to Milan," asserts Paolo Cocchi, General Secretary of the Unidea - UniCredit Foundation.
