UniCredit brings Google Pay to Customers in Romania

UniCredit announces that Google Pay, the NFC mobile payment solution for Android phones supporting Google services, is now available for its private individual customers in Romania, in addition to existing mobile payment options offered by the bank. This makes UniCredit one of the first Romanian banks to offer the widest possible range of mobile payment options.

With Google Pay, UniCredit cardholders using Android devices, are now able to make fast and secure contactless in-store payments using their smartphone, in Romania or anywhere in the world where contactless payments are accepted. Google Pay can also be used to make in-app and online payments, offering to the UniCredit Bank customers an integrated payment method that can be used on all the channels. Customers can add their UniCredit credit and debit cards, Mastercard or Visa, from the UniCredit Mobile Banking application to Google Pay and start using it for payments in stores, online and in app. When using Google Pay for payments, cardholders will continue to receive all of the rewards and benefits offered by UniCredit' credit and debit cards.

Antoaneta Curteanu, Executive Vice-president of the Retail Division UniCredit Bank: "Offering Google Pay to cardholders in Romania is another step of UniCredit commitment to be a top digital bank and we are very happy to be able to provide our customers with another solution that makes their everyday purchases fast, secure and simple. Google Pay makes payments easier for our clients, giving them the option to intentionally leave their cards at home; this kind of payment experience, modern and convenient, is what we always strive to offer to our clients. With this launch today, all our individual clients have the possibility to adopt and use a mobile payment option".

Elena Ungureanu, Country Manager Visa: "It is only a matter of time until mobile payments gain further momentum/ are adopted on a large scale, taking into account the Romanians' appetite for using mobile devices and the modern payment infrastructure in our country. Mobile payments work on the same contactless terminals that consumers already use when paying with a contactless debit or credit card, enjoying increased mobility and security. Over 7 out of 10 Visa cards in Romania can be used with Google Pay for payments at any contactless POS. Together with UniCredit, we are delighted to be able to offer this service to Visa cardholders, who will now be able to use their connected Android devices to pay contactless, in a secure and convenient way."

To pay with Google Pay, UniCredit customers only need to have a compatible device and add to their UniCredit cards to Google Pay, using the Mobile Banking application. Google Pay works on any NFC-enabled Android device running Lollipop 5.0 or higher for in-store purchases. Customers can also use Google Pay on any Android device to make in app or online purchases.
