Puliamo il Mondo (Clean Up the World)

Puliamo il Mondo (Clean Up the World) is the Italian edition of one of the world's largest community-based environmental campaigns.  The initiative brings together businesses, community groups, schools, governments and volunteers to inspire and empower communities around the globe to work together to clean up, fix up and protect the environment.

From September 16 to 18 and 23 to 25, volunteers across Italy will roll up their sleeves and clean up cities, parks, beaches and rivers, while building greater understanding of the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling and of protecting green zones from waste and unauthorized development.

This year, there will be a focus on raising awareness of Italian freshwater consumption.  Italy is the largest consumer of mineral water in the world and its consumption results in millions of plastic bottles that contribute to tons of transportation-related CO2 emissions.

Hundreds of associations volunteered to serve as operation centers during the event and are listed on the website: www.puliamoilmondo.it.  Volunteers interested in playing an active role in the initiative are encouraged to contact these associations for more information on how they can get involved.

The "Clean Up the World from WEEE too" initiative, spearheaded by RAEEporter, will be launched during the event.  In collaboration with Ecodom - an Italian consortium working to retrieve and recycle household appliances - and Legambiente, RAEEporter aims to educate the public on how to responsibly dispose of electrical and electronic equipment waste (WEEE), including refrigerators, computers, washing machines and televisions.  For more information on this initiative, please visit: www.raeeporter.it.

This year, UniCredit is once again a proud sponsor of Puliamo il Mondo, which underscores our Group's firm commitment to safeguarding the environment.  Additionally, in support of the European Year of Volunteering 2011, UniCredit has pledged to promote the initiative among company employees.

Our Group has committed to an important agreement to recycle its electrical and electronic equipment waste.  Further information on these efforts is available in our 2010 Sustainability Report (see page 76).
