Artissima 16: Contemporary Art in Turin
From November 6 to 8, 2009, the 16th edition of Artissima, the International Fair of Contemporary Art, will be held in Turin.
Organized and promoted by the Fondazione Torino Musei, Artissima has become an essential meeting place for collectors, gallery owners and emerging artists. UniCredit Group, the event's main partner, together with UniCredit Private Banking, supports the fair for the wealth of ideas, creativity and innovation that it generates, as well as for its status as one of the most vital events in the international art arena.
Artissima not only showcases a selection of the most famous and cutting-edge galleries on the global scene, it also becomes a true celebration of the arts, energizing the whole city of Turin with its innovative cultural offerings.
For the first time, all of the events will this year revolve around a single theme - the theater, or, more specifically, the action and concept of performance as conceived in the field of visual arts during the 1960s. The festival, entitled "Blinding the Ears," revolves around a calendar of events taking place in all of the city's major theaters: the Teatro Regio, Teatro Carignano, Teatro Gobetti, Teatro Astra and the Cavallerizza Reale.
The different sections of Artissima focus on various aspects of the world of contemporary art:
- Main Section: presenting more than a hundred galleries drawn from the very best of the national and international art scenes;
- Present Future: a section dedicated to young artists presented by emerging galleries and selected by an international panel of curators;
- New Entries: a section reserved for avant-garde galleries chosen on the basis of their artistic explorations - none of which has been open for more than five years or previously attended Artissima;
- Constellations: displaying large-scale masterworks chosen by an international committee from submissions by participating galleries, located in the fair's large entrance area.
Many noteworthy related events and displays have also been organized, including The Store. This is an actual shop, exhibiting and offering works by more than 30 artists. Artissima Cinema is a section that opened in 2007 to explore the connections between different artistic languages. And Listen to the Writer provides a unique opportunity for the public to experience the fair with some additional guidance from important critics and journalists. Two additional events taking place in the city include Artissima Volume and Artissima Fumetto.
On the opening day of Artissima 16, Friday, November 6, at 4 pm, the first trial project in Italy will be presented of a program designed to ensure the full enjoyment of contemporary art by deaf people. This initiative was developed by UniCredit Group, the Castello di Rivoli's education department and Turin's Institute for the Deaf (please find attached the press release).
In 2008, the fair attracted 45,000 visitors. They were drawn from an international audience of collectors, museum directors, curators, other representatives of art institutions, critics, artists, the business world, young people interested in new forms of cultural expression, and the public at large. More than a thousand Italian and foreign journalists attended.
