"Contemporary Italy, San Lorenzo Workshop" at Mart
The Mart museum is pleased to host a new exhibition, from May 16 to September 27, entitled "Contemporary Italy, San Lorenzo Workshop" (Italia Contemporanea, Officina San Lorenzo), curated by Daniela Lancioni. The exhibition takes a look into the creative universe of a group of Roman artists in the late 1960s who established their artistic headquarters in the abandoned Cerere pasta factory in the city's San Lorenzo quarter.
This setting enabled each of the artists to experiment and identify a unique creative approach. Bruno Ceccobelli, Gianni Dessì, Giuseppe Gallo, Nunzio, Piero Pizzi Cannella and Marco Tirelli did not share a common agenda. But they did share a belief in the unique and independent nature of their works, and they retained the disciplines of painting and sculpture at the center of their artistic pursuits.
The show attempts to trace the different experiences that led into the renewal of Italian painting and sculpture in the 1980s and 1990s. This group of artists developed new expressive approaches that transcended the division between abstract and figurative art in a way that drew on the tenets of the Arte Povera and Transavanguardia movements.
The exhibition illustrates the group's activities through more than 50 works dating from 1979 to 2008. These include Ceccobelli's "Morpheus" and "Loggia" (1979), both on loan from the Groninger Museum; Gallo's painting "Enchanted" (1983), his first making use of the figure of the wise old man; the sculptures by Nunzio that earned him the 1986 Biennale di Venezia award for best young artist; and Tirelli's "Untitled" (1989). Also on display will be a recreated "Painted Chamber" (1991) by Dessì, as well as some of Cannella's most challenging pictorial works, including "Abiti", "Ferri battuti", "Bagni turchi" and "Polittici".
With "Contemporary Italy, San Lorenzo Workshop", UniCredit Group is reaffirming the commitment it made five years ago to promote and disseminate Italian art through acquisitions and projects carried out in collaboration with partner museums. Several works by Ceccobelli, Dessì and Cannella from the Group's collection are on loan to the museum for this exhibition.
