The House of Charity, strongly supported by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, opened on November 24, 2004. Don Virginio Colmegna directs the shelter, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is available to vulnerable people who have been excluded from society and are living at risk. The shelter is symbolically located on the extreme outskirts of Milan, where it provides services which help to restore people's dignity as well as fostering social reintegration through assistance finding housing and employment. The organization also promotes cultural activities and provides a place of reflection on themes of acceptance and social inclusion.
The House of Charity launched a long-term partnership with Unidea - UniCredit Foundation to collaborate on cultural events promoted by the Charity Academy (Accademia della Carità) and on various social activities, particularly those aimed at helping the Roma community.
UniCredit Group, a major partner of Filarmonica della Scala, seeks to promote and enhance shared values and the integration of creative languages in service of societies' many and distinct cultural roots.
