May 2009
Teatro alla Scala, Milan

Proceeds to benefit the House of Charity Foundation

Milan - On Sunday May 3, 2009, at 8:30 pm, the prestigious Teatro alla Scala will host an open rehearsal featuring Filarmonica della Scala under the direction of acclaimed conductor Gustavo Dudamel. The soprano Ana María Martínez will also perform and proceeds will go to the House of Charity Foundation (Fondazione Casa della Carità).

This rare open rehearsal will offer music lovers a unique opportunity to observe renowned artists create a classical concert. During the event, the audience will be offered a window into the development and of a world-class performance.

The young and acclaimed Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel (born in 1981) will conduct the orchestra's performance of Symphony no. 4 in A major opus 90 "Italian" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. The orchestra will also perform Symphony no. 4 in G major by Gustav Mahler with soprano Ana María Martínez. Ms. Martínez is well known to international opera audiences for her work with tenor Plácido Domingo, among other artists.

For the third time this season, Filarmonica della Scala will open a private rehearsal to stand in unity with the broader community and to provide an opportunity for the public to support the needy and, in this case, a worthy foundation.

The House of Charity, strongly supported by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, opened on November 24, 2004. Don Virginio Colmegna directs the shelter, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is available to vulnerable people who have been excluded from society and are living at risk. The shelter is symbolically located on the extreme outskirts of Milan, where it provides services which help to restore people's dignity as well as fostering social reintegration through assistance finding housing and employment. The organization also promotes cultural activities and provides a place of reflection on themes of acceptance and social inclusion.

The House of Charity launched a long-term partnership with Unidea - UniCredit Foundation to collaborate on cultural events promoted by the Charity Academy (Accademia della Carità) and on various social activities, particularly those aimed at helping the Roma community.

UniCredit Group, a major partner of Filarmonica della Scala, seeks to promote and enhance shared values and the integration of creative languages in service of societies' many and distinct cultural roots.
