George Braque at the Bank Austria Kunstforum in Vienna
Commenting on the paintings by George Braque on display at the Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler gallery in Paris in November 1908, critic Louis Vauxcelles used the term "Cubism" for the first time. The exchange and close co-operation between Picasso and Braque between 1909 and 1914 gave start to great innovation in pictorial and plastic languages, which revolutionized the way of conceiving space, volumes, and forms. By disputing the schemes of traditional perspective through the breakdown of planes and the simultaneous presence of multiple points of view, Cubism introduced a conceptual vision, capable to move away from a mere representation of real life.
A great retrospective show dedicated to George Braque officially opens on November 14 at the Bank Austria Kunstforum in Vienna, the art centre of Bank Austria, a member of the UniCredit Group. The show, supervised by Heike Eipeldauer (of the Bank Austria Kunstforum) and Caroline Messensee, reviews the output of one of the key figures of Cubism through important international works borrowed from the Tate Modern gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum and the MoMA in New York, and the Kunstmuseum in Basle. Eighty paintings, as well as the most important graphic works, tell about the development of the great French artist, his contacts with the expressionist experience and the Fauves group, the invention of papier collé, his decisive interest for still life, as well as the latest, most "lyrical" developments of his studies.
Ample room is dedicated to the "Ateliers" series, a number of variations on the theme focusing on the artist's studio, an inexhaustible source of forms and materials where all energies seem to converge.
The show, open to the public until March 1, is also an opportunity to discover the latest years of Braque when, back in the 1950s, the artist found shelter in Normandy, returning to the landscape genre in small-size works with a strong poetic flair.
On occasion of the retrospective show, a catalogue, Georges Braque (Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern-Ruit), will be published, with inputs by Neil Cox, Heike Eipeldauer, Edith Futscher, Christopher Green, Caroline Messensee, Nicolas Surlapierre, and Juliane Vogel
