Friday 22 January 2021
When it's cold outside, there's nothing better than getting cosy up with a nourishing, wholesome, home-cooked meal. With so much time spent indoors, we have a golden opportunity to sharpen our cooking skills and try out new recipes. Here are three ways to make use of seasonal ingredients to delight everyone’s palate
Soups are a perfect winter food. They warm you up and provide nourishment, while also being easy to make and budget-friendly. Hearty soups with root vegetables, legumes or squashes are a great choice for this season. Mix flavours and combinations to prepare your own minestrone, roasted butternut squash or lentil soup recipes, and pair them up with a side of wholesome seed crackers for an additional dose of grains.
Cold weather can increase our craving for sugary foods like chocolate, sweets or cookies. But there are lots of winter recipes that can be comforting and healthy at the same time. And if you want to help our planet as well, use seasonal vegetables to make excellent quiche, savoury pies, stews, roasts or pasta dishes. Homemade drinks are also a good way to keep you warm and celebrate the season’s harvest. There are plenty of possibilities to choose from: hot cocoa, eggnog, pumpkin-spice latte and ginger punch are just a few examples. Alternatively, some festive warm alcoholic drinks like mulled wine or mulled cider with cinnamon, and spice up your chilly winter nights!
