A NEW WORLD: Shaping the future of ESG

    #UniCreditESGDay

Streaming live on November 19th, 10.00-12.15 (CET).

We are hosting this year's event in a new world. A world that has become increasingly divided on ESG.

ESG Day 2025, streamed live from UniCredit HQ, will focus on the difficult and unanswered questions about the future of environmental and social strategy, the social impacts of the climate crisis and why - despite headwinds - it is still necessary and urgent to commit to ESG.

Through a series of panels and speeches, expert speakers will challenge the status quo, prompt new thinking, and tackle key topics such as:

  • The future of ESG - passing trend or an economic necessity?
  • Financing the transition - how banking can unlock opportunities for business in an uncertain world
  • Policy under pressure - the role of EU regulation in enabling a sustainable transition
  • Integrating nature and biodiversity into financial decision-making
  • A better future - the evolving role of banks in driving social progress
  • Bridging ambition and action: Delivering resilient and sustainable supply chains

We will be tackling this and more, alongside local events tackling the specific ESG priorities in each of our markets.

10:05 Keynote: The future of ESG – passing trend or an economic necessity?

Prof. Tito Boeri, Head of the Economics Department at Bocconi University

The climate crisis remains as urgent as ever, yet skepticism around ESG is growing. For the first time in six years, US shareholders failed to pass any green proposals, and ESG funds are seeing unprecedented withdrawals. Professor Boeri will set the broader macroeconomic context for ESG Day 2025, examining how these dynamics are impacting businesses, banks, and communities in Europe, and what the future holds for ESG beyond the backlash.

Fiona Melrose - Head of Group Strategy and ESG UniCredit

Elizabeth Meager - Acting deputy editor at Sustainable Views

Banks have a critical role to play in enabling and financing the transition. This roundtable will explore how financial institutions can support businesses as ESG expectations evolve and mobilise capital to drive climate and social action. It will also be a chance to share best practices and understand the barriers and opportunities to financing Europe’s transition.

Giuseppe Zammarchi - Group ESG UniCredit
Lucia Marin - Deputy Head of Unit – E.1 Green Finance and Investments, DG Environment, European Commission

The EU is central to steering the transition and strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. This session will unpack the EU’s efforts to simplify and streamline regulation and what this means in practice for businesses and their sustainability journeys. It will also examine how banks, businesses and regulators can better work together to balance climate ambitions against economic competitiveness and achieve a sustainable transition.

Interview: Integrating nature and biodiversity into financial decision-making

Dr. Frauke Fischer, Department of Animal Ecology and Tropical Biology Biocenter, University of Würzburg, Managing Partner Agentur auf!

Nature and biodiversity is the basis of our existence, and its loss poses a systemic risk to our economy and society. Dr Fischer will argue that its protection should be an imperative for businesses worldwide and embedded into the strategies of financial institutions. She will also explore how new technologies like AI could accelerate alternative economic models.
